Khamenei gave green signal to the agreement with America on the confidence that Iran’s rights will be protected
New Delhi: Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, in his first public reaction to the proposed agreement with the US, said that initially he had some serious concerns about this document. However, President Massoud Pezeshkian and officials associated with the country’s top security apparatus assured them that Iran’s national interests will not be compromised in any negotiation or agreement. After this he gave approval to take this process forward.
After the virtual signing of the draft agreement prepared between America and Iran, Khamenei clarified that his opinion was different in the beginning. He believed that extreme caution was needed in any such agreement. But when he was assured that the Iranian people, the country’s sovereignty and the interests of regional allies would be completely safe, he agreed to the agreement.
What did Khamenei say?
Khamenei said that the President and members of the Supreme National Security Council had assured him that protecting Iran’s rights and strategic interests would be the top priority during the talks. On the basis of this confidence, he decided to approve the agreement.
In his address, he also tried to give a message to those who oppose any kind of talks with America. Khamenei said that the talks do not mean that Iran is accepting US policies or approaches. He stressed that if face-to-face talks take place between the two countries in future, it should not be seen as any kind of ideological or political agreement.
warning to America
He also warned America that if Washington tries to impose excessive conditions or create additional pressure during the talks, Tehran will not accept it. Iran is not ready to retreat from its national interests.
These statements of Khamenei are also considered important because they have given a glimpse of Iran’s internal decision process. At a time when a crucial 60-day negotiation period is about to begin between Tehran and Washington, it indicates that the Iranian leadership is ready for talks, but in no mood to make any compromise on its terms and interests.
