Kolkata RG Kar rape case: 3 IPS officers suspended in Bengal

The West Bengal government has suspended three IPS officers for alleged negligence in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. Besides, orders for departmental inquiry have been given and action has also been taken against the jail administration.

Once again a major political and administrative development has come to light regarding the rape and murder case that took place in Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari held a press conference on Friday and announced major action on the allegations of serious administrative negligence related to the investigation process in this sensitive case.

The Chief Minister claimed that due to alleged irregularities and procedural lapses in the investigation, the state government has suspended three senior IPS officers and departmental proceedings are also being initiated against them.

Action taken against which IPS officers?

According to the government announcement, the officials against whom action has been taken include

  • Former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal
  • Former DCP (North) Abhishek Gupta
  • DCP (Central) Indira Mukherjee

According to the government, these officers are accused of serious negligence during the investigation process and did not follow several important procedural rules.

Allegations of irregularities in the investigation process

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari alleged that several serious mistakes were made in the initial phase of the investigation, due to which the direction of the case was affected. He claimed that some officers have also been accused of unfair treatment and pressurizing the victim’s family.

Furthermore, it was also alleged that some media briefings and press conferences were held without proper administrative permission, raising questions over the confidentiality and transparency of the investigation.

The government says that a detailed departmental inquiry will be conducted into all these aspects and if anyone else’s role comes to light, further action will be taken.

Allegations and serious questions of the victim’s family

In this entire case, the victim’s family has been continuously claiming that the investigation was incomplete and many important evidences were ignored. The family alleged that many aspects related to the forensic report and the crime scene were not fully investigated.

The family also says that the role of only one person in this heinous crime is not questioned, but other people may also be involved in it.

On this basis, the family has approached the Calcutta High Court demanding a re- and impartial investigation of the case.

Stir after finding mobile and SIM in jail

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the news of recovery of mobile phone and SIM card from Kolkata’s Presidency Correctional Home (Jail) has raised serious questions on the administrative system.

According to reports, the jail superintendent has been suspended after banned electronic devices were found inside the jail. Along with this, action has also been taken against two other jail officers.

According to government sources, the investigation of this case can now be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to find out how the mobile reached inside the jail and whether any insider network had a role in it.

Background of RG tax case

This entire matter is of 9th August 2024, when Kolkata based R.G. The body of a junior female doctor was found in the seminar hall of Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident shocked the entire country and led to massive protests by doctors, students and civil organizations.

After preliminary investigation, Kolkata Police arrested a civilian volunteer, Sanjay Roy. Later, after increasing public pressure and questions raised in the investigation, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Court decision and punishment

In January 2025, the trial court convicted Sanjay Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family is not completely satisfied with this decision.

The family says that the investigation process ignored many important leads and failed to reach the real conspirators.

Political and administrative impact

This entire incident has created a new stir in the politics of West Bengal. The government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has called it a tough step towards administrative reforms, while the opposition is seeing it as an attempt to exert political pressure and influence the investigation.

Experts believe that if the departmental investigation proceeds in a transparent and impartial manner, it can lead to major reforms in the police and jail administration system of the state.
