Kolkata: Clash over changing the name of Suhrawardy Avenue, TMC MLA raised questions on the corporation’s decision.

Suhrawardy Avenue Name Change: Politics has heated up in West Bengal over the decision to change the name of Kolkata’s main road Suhrawardy Avenue to Gopal Mukherjee Road. On this issue, Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra has raised questions on the decision process citing the rules of the Municipal Corporation. He said that according to the rules of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the name of a road named after an area can be changed, but there are no clear rules regarding changing the name of a road already named after a person.

However, he also said that if the government has taken any decision then it is acceptable, but clarity of rules is necessary. On the other hand, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the decision, calling it a step to correct a historical mistake. Told. Madan Mitra cited the rules

Madan Mitra said, ”We are just saying that as per the rules of the Municipal Corporation, like Chowringhee Road was renamed as Jawaharlal Nehru Road, because ‘Chowringhee’ It was not the name of any person, but the name of an area. As far as we know, there is no clear rule in the Municipal Corporation to change the names of roads already named after any person.”

He said that if the government has taken any decision, then it is acceptable, but clarity of rules is necessary. This reaction comes at a time when Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to change the name of Suhrawardy Avenue to Gopal Mukherjee Road.

CM Suvendu Adhikari has appreciated this decision of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. He wrote on social media platform A step in the direction. The Chief Minister wrote, ‘I appreciate this historic decision taken by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, which was taken on the occasion of West Bengal Day. This will help in correcting the historical mistake. Suhrawardy Avenue will now be named Gopal Mukherjee Road.”
