Police have arrested 11 people in connection with the violence that took place during the student protest in Kolkata. According to officials, all the accused arrested are not students. Police are investigating the case further on the basis of CCTV footage and digital evidence.
Kolkata: The police have taken major action and arrested 11 people in connection with the violence that took place during the student protest in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. According to police officials, all those arrested are accused in cases related to violence, damage to public property and alleged attack on journalists. Officials say that in the initial investigation no student has been found among the arrested persons.
This action has come at a time when political and social debate is intense in the state regarding the student movement and incidents related to it. Police say that an impartial investigation into the matter is going on and if the involvement of other people comes to light, legal action will be taken against them also.
What did the police say?
Kolkata Police’s Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Aggarwal told the media that so far 11 people have been arrested in connection with the violence and alleged attacks on journalists. According to him, during investigation it emerged that none of the arrested persons were students. The officer said the police are analyzing all the available evidence and will ensure that no one violating the law is spared.
Important role of digital evidence in investigation
Police said that during the investigation, footage from CCTV cameras installed around the incident site, videos recorded from mobile phones and visual material available in the media are being analyzed. With the help of digital evidence, efforts are being made to find out who were involved in the violence and what role they played. According to officials, further arrests may be made based on video analysis and technical investigation.
Two accused were caught before leaving the state
According to the police, two of the arrested accused were trying to leave West Bengal. Officials said that he was stopped near Durgapur Expressway and taken into custody. Investigating agencies say that all the accused are being interrogated and other possible aspects related to the case are also being investigated.
Investigation into alleged attack on journalists also
Complaints of alleged attack on journalists have also been registered in this case. Police say that aspects related to the security of media personnel are being investigated separately. In a democratic system, the safety of journalists and the right to report independently is considered extremely important.
