Kyrie Irving Keeps Long-Term Mavericks Future Open Amid Trade Rumors
Kyrie Irving has left his long-term future with the Dallas Mavericks open as he prepares to return to NBA action following a lengthy recovery from a torn ACL.
During the Mavericks’ recent media availability, Irving was asked whether he wanted to finish his career in Dallas. Rather than making a firm commitment, the veteran guard acknowledged that his future is not entirely in his hands.
“I wish a lot of that was under my control, but I think it’s a collaborative effort here,” Irving said while discussing his future with the Mavericks.
The comments come at a time when speculation surrounding Irving’s future has continued across the NBA. However, Irving emphasized that his attention is currently on the team and its ambitions for the upcoming season.
Irving Focused on Winning in Dallas
Irving also addressed the age difference between himself and the Mavericks’ young core, particularly 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.
The 34-year-old guard said people have made a significant issue out of the age gap, but his priority is helping the Mavericks compete.
“We’re trying to win,” Irving said, adding that neither he nor the team is approaching the season without expectations.
The Mavericks are entering a new phase under team president Masai Ujiri and head coach Dusty May. Cooper Flagg is expected to play a major role in the team’s future, while Irving brings veteran experience and leadership to the roster.
Irving Returns After Major Injury
Irving missed the entire 2025-26 season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee in March 2025.
After approximately 19 months away from competitive basketball, he recently returned to the Mavericks and said he is under no physical restrictions. Irving has also spoken about how his rehabilitation changed his perspective on extending his career and returning to the court.
The Mavericks have expressed excitement about having Irving back alongside Flagg. Irving himself has spoken positively about the opportunity to develop alongside the young star.

Irving signed a three-year, $119 million extension with Dallas in 2025 after declining his previous player option. The deal was structured to keep him under contract through the 2027-28 season, with a player option for the final year.
That means his immediate future is tied to Dallas, even though his latest comments leave the question of whether he will finish his career with the Mavericks unanswered.
Trade speculation has continued during the offseason, but recent reporting indicates that Dallas has rejected trade inquiries involving Irving and currently expects him to begin the 2026-27 season with the team.
For now, Irving’s message is relatively straightforward: he wants to compete, help Dallas win and make the most of his return. Whether that eventually becomes the final chapter of his NBA career in Dallas remains an open question.
