The story is set in 1893 in the post-Victorian era of the British colonial rule in India. The people of a small village in central India are faced with the twin problems of unjust taxes (Lagaan) under the British rule and several years of severe drought. Meanwhile, Captain Russell, an arrogant officer of the British Indian Army, challenges the villagers to a match of ‘cricket’ on the condition of tax exemption for the next three years. The villagers have a tough challenge to learn the techniques and win in a game they know nothing about.

The film ‘Lagaan’ represented India in many International Film Festivals around the world and won numerous awards. This is the third and so far the last Indian film to be nominated for the world famous Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
