Rebels turn their backs to Mamata Banerjee’s agitation

The entire high-voltage drama unfolded after a secret meeting of the rebel MLAs in the Assembly premises. Interestingly, all the MLAs present at the meeting completely turned their backs on the public dharna protest organized by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Tuesday. On the other hand, senior leaders Shobhandev Chattopadhyay, Naina Bandopadhyay, Madan Mitra and Kunal Ghosh, who are considered very loyal to Mamata Banerjee, kept themselves away from the legislative session on Wednesday.

Calculation of Defection Prohibition Act

According to the strict rules of the Prohibition of Defection Act, any splinter group or splinter group in the legislature must have the support of at least two-thirds (2/3) of the total number of MLAs of the parent party to avoid legal disqualification. Considering the total 80 MLAs of Trinamool Congress, this legal limit stops at 54 MLAs. The rebel group seems to have successfully completed this technical phase as they have submitted letters of support from 58 MLAs.

Rebellion erupted after suspension action

After the West Bengal Assembly election results were announced, Mamata Banerjee suspended Ratbrat Banerjee and Sandeepan Shah from the Trinamool Congress, accusing them of anti-party activities. It was only after this action that internal divisions within the party grew and an official outbreak of rebellion broke out. New Leader of Opposition Ritbrata Banerjee, explaining his stance, said, “We will play the role of a competent and responsible opposition party in the House and in the state. Our politics will not only be anti-opposition, but we will do absolutely positive politics for the people of West Bengal.”
