LeBron James on the GOAT debate: “I’m not taking anybody over me”
As he approaches the closing stages of a legendary career, LeBron James has no intention of hiding behind false modesty.
Speaking with Time for an extensive profile the four-time NBA champion addressed the never-ending debate over the greatest player of all time – commonly known as the GOAT – between himself and Michael Jordanfirmly backing his own case with a statement that leaves very little room for interpretation.
I’m not taking anybody over me. There’s no doubt about that. But I think Mike would say the same thing. God rest his soul, Kobe would’ve said the same thing. And so would Magic, Bird, Shaq, the great Wilt or Kareem. None of us would ever pick someone else over ourselves
LeBron James
His reasoning begins with mutual respect among legends, but it leads to a very clear conclusion.
But I’ll tell you this: if there was a general manager standing on the baseline watching all of us together and deciding who deserved the No. 1 overall pick in the Draft… man, it’d be really hard not to pick me
LeBron James
However, his stance becomes less definitive when the conversation shifts to global cultural impact, where the King acknowledges the untouchable status of Chicago’s iconic legend.
If you ask someone who grew up in the Jordan era, they’ll say Jordan. If you ask someone who grew up in my era… they’d probably still say Jordan. Everyone has their own opinion. I never looked at another guy’s shoes and said, ‘Damn, I need to be better than him.’ My journey is my journey. I know what I’ve brought to the table in terms of basketball, inspiration and social influence. I can walk into any room on this planet with my head held high
LeBron James
Whether that journey has reached its final chapter remains to be seen. Rumors – including speculation about a possible move to Golden State – suggest that this summer the four-time MVP, an unrestricted free agent, will seek a maximum contract from the Lakers worth $50 million including a player option for the 2027-28 season and a no-trade clause.
It all depends on the mind. Wherever the mind goes, the body follows. When I no longer love showing up at the arena five hours before a game to begin my preparation, or when I no longer want to get to practice two and a half hours early, then I’ll know it’s over. Because at that point, I’d be starting to cheat the game
LeBron James
The numbers, meanwhile, stopped being an issue long ago: four NBA championships, 22 All-Star selections and the title of the league’s all-time leading scorer. LeBron has played more games, won more games and scored more points than anyone else ever to wear an NBA jersey. The only question left is when he will decide to write the final chapter.
