The administration is taking a major step to curb air pollution in Ghaziabad and enforce regulations. Now, preparations are underway to implement a new “barricade system” at petrol pumps in the district. Under this system, vehicles will be checked at the entry point of the petrol pump. Vehicles violating rules and lacking the required documents will be stopped outside the barricade and will not be allowed inside.
According to media reports, special barricades and “Automatic Number Plate Recognition” (ANPR) cameras will be installed at petrol pump entrances. The goal is to complete the installation of these cameras at all 123 petrol pumps in the district by September 30, 2026. These cameras will be directly connected to the National Informatics Center (NIC) website and the Transport Department’s database. As soon as a vehicle approaches the pump, the cameras will instantly scan its number plate.
Speakers are also being installed along with the cameras at petrol pumps. If a vehicle’s pollution certificate (PUC) or insurance fails, the system will immediately announce its number over a loudspeaker and the vehicle will be removed from the barricade.
Additionally, vehicles with 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol (or below BS-4) engines that have exceeded the Delhi-NCR regulations will be automatically identified and challaned, and fuel will be denied.
According to District Supply Officer Amit Tiwari, all petrol pump operators have been instructed to complete the technical preparations within the stipulated timeframe. This system will be implemented compulsorily across the entire Ghaziabad district from October 1, 2026.
