On the first trading day of the week, Indian oil marketing companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—have today released new retail rates of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders across the country on 7 September 2026. From ordinary domestic consumers to businessmen running hotels, dhabas and restaurants, it is very important to know the price of gas cylinder at the beginning of every month and week, because it has a direct impact on their monthly budget planning and operating costs.
Amid fluctuations in crude oil prices in the international energy market and fluctuations in the exchange rate of rupee against dollar, government oil companies today kept the prices of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders stable. Whereas the prices of 19 kg blue colored commercial cylinders are trading stable after minor revisions in the beginning of the month. This has provided relief to common middle class families on the inflation front, while food and catering businessmen are also finding it easier to manage their budget.
There is a slight difference in the prices of gas cylinders in the four major metros of the country depending on local taxes and transportation cost. In the national capital New Delhi, 14.2 kg non-subsidized domestic gas cylinder is becoming available to consumers today at the price of Rs 942.00. Whereas in Delhi, the price of 19 kg commercial cylinder used in commercial activities remains at Rs 2,747.50 per cylinder.
In the country's financial capital Mumbai, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder is Rs 941.50, whereas here a 19 kg commercial cylinder is available for Rs 2,701.00. In Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, domestic LPG cylinder remains at the level of Rs 968.00 and commercial cylinder at Rs 2,884.00. Apart from this, in Chennai, the major metropolis of South India, customers have to pay Rs 957.50 for a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder, whereas the price of commercial gas there has been recorded at Rs 2,916.50.
In Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, after adding local transport expenses and VAT, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder is Rs 979.50, while the price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder is Rs 2,870.00. In NCR areas adjacent to Delhi like Noida and Greater Noida, domestic cylinder is available for Rs 939.50 and commercial cylinder for Rs 2,747.50. Whereas in Gurugram, Haryana, domestic gas is being sold at Rs 950.50 per cylinder.
In Jaipur, Rajasthan, the rate of 14.2 kg domestic cylinder is Rs 945.50 and the rate of commercial cylinder is Rs 2,776.00. In Bihar's capital Patna, due to higher transportation costs and local levies compared to other states, the domestic gas cylinder has reached the level of Rs 1,031.50, while the price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder here is Rs 3,029.00. Domestic LPG is available at an average of Rs 951.50 in Chandigarh and around Rs 947.50 in Bhopal and Indore of Madhya Pradesh.

The budget for LPG is directly linked to the savings and food costs of a typical family. Despite continued global turmoil and rising costs of imported liquefied gas, the government and oil marketing companies have refrained from any fresh increase in domestic cylinder prices. The Central Government is providing Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) subsidy of Rs 300 for up to 12 cylinders per year to the eligible beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) directly into their bank accounts.
For beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme, a 14.2 kg cylinder effectively costs only Rs 642 in Delhi. Due to this, rural areas and economically weaker sections are getting freedom from smoke as well as making huge savings in their household expenses. With long-term stable rates even for ordinary non-subsidised customers, there is no added stress of budget upset on the first Monday of the month.
Commercial LPG cylinders are mainly used in restaurants, hotels, sweet shops, tea-stalls and small industrial plants. Commercial gas prices are revised on the 1st of every month based on international benchmark prices and Saudi Aramco's CP (Contract Price). A slight increase of Rs 9.50 per cylinder was recorded in the beginning of September.
This increase is so small that it has not had any major impact on the prices of food plates in dhabas and restaurants. Traders say that the big cut in commercial gas prices in the past had given relief to businesses to a great extent. If international fuel prices remain under control, cost pressure on the catering and sweets business will remain under control during the upcoming festive season (Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath).
This question often arises in the minds of consumers that when oil marketing companies are government owned, then why is the price of gas one thing in Delhi and something else in Patna or Hyderabad? The main reasons for this are Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed by state governments, local body tax and transportation cost from the bottling plant to the retail distributor.
In coastal cities or where LPG import terminals and refineries are close, transportation costs are lower. In contrast, the logistics cost of delivering cylinders to remote areas in hilly states (such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir) and North-Eastern states increases significantly. This is the reason why LPG cylinder prices in Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and North-Eastern states are slightly higher than other parts of the country.
