Mamta Banerjee could not tolerate defeat! High court reached against Bhawanipur result

Kolkata:Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has challenged the election results of Bhawanipur Assembly seat in the Kolkata High Court. Mamta suddenly reached the court in the afternoon and signed the documents related to the petition. Trinamool MPs Derek O’Brien, Dola Sena and Kalyan Banerjee were also present with him.

This step has come at a time when there is intense discussion both inside and outside the party regarding the defeat in Bhawanipur. Mamata herself had contested from this seat and her contest against Suvendu Adhikari was direct.

Mamta lost by 15104 votes

The contest on Bhawanipur seat was very tough. Suvendu Adhikari won by securing 73917 votes, while Mamata Banerjee got 58812 votes. In this way Suvendu won the seat by a margin of 15104 votes. CPM candidate Shrijib Biswas, who stood third, had got 3556 votes.

Mamta was leading till the first 16-17 rounds of counting. But as the count of the last stages increased, Suvendu steadily gained the lead and ultimately achieved a big victory.

There was commotion during counting

The atmosphere was quite tense during the counting of Bhawanipur. There were reports of commotion both outside and inside the counting centre. Supporters of both the parties came face to face and the security forces had to take control of the situation.

Mamata Banerjee has been alleging that there were irregularities in the counting process. On this basis he has approached the High Court. Mamta, who arrived with the legal team, herself signed the petition and made it clear that she is not taking this matter lightly.

The matter is politically important

Bhawanipur seat has always been special for Mamata Banerjee. She was representing this seat since 2011. The defeat at the hands of Suvendu Adhikari in the 2021 elections was considered a big blow for the party, because Suvendu was once close to Mamata and a veteran Trinamool leader.

Now the case of Bhawanipur has once again come into limelight due to the petition filed in the High Court. If the court hears this petition, its impact will be clearly visible in the politics of Bengal. At present, Mamta’s legal battle will decide whether this chapter of Bhawanipur ends here or takes a new turn.
