Man allegedly steals $187 worth of Black Thorn durians from Singapore shop

The incident took place at about 3:40 a.m. on Sunday at the Hojiak Durian & Fruits shop, located at Block 351, Jurong East Street 31, according to CCTV footage posted to the store’s Facebook page that same day.

The video shows a man in a dark green T-shirt and beige shorts approaching a basket of durians that was partly covered by a blue tarpaulin.

He is seen glancing around while holding several plastic bags before filling them with durians and walking away.

The shop owner later told Shin Min Daily News that the man had taken nine Black Thorn durians, a premium variety, with a total value of around S$240.

He said the man had visited the shop before but had not been seen for more than a year.

“If he really had difficulties and wanted to eat durian, he could have just told us, and we could have treated him to some,” the shop owner said, according to Mothership.

He noted that the shop has been targeted by theft on multiple occasions over the last five years, particularly during the peak season.

“Sometimes when we have a large stock, durians are left outside. Someone will take one or two, but this man took nine at once and left to get a plastic bag before coming back,” he was quoted by AsiaOne as saying. “It’s really outrageous.”
