Manas Dhamne finishes runner-up at Shymkent Challenger

Indian teenager Manas Dhamne finished runner-up at the ATP Challenger event in Shymkent, capping off a breakthrough week that is set to push him into the top 400 of the ATP rankings for the first time.

The 18-year-old went down fighting against Belgium’s Buvaysar Gadamauri in the final, losing 6-7(8), 4-6 in a closely contested match. Dhamne showed composure beyond his years, particularly in the opening set where he pushed the contest into a tight tiebreak and even held set points before narrowly losing it 8-10.

The loss of the first set shifted momentum, with Gadamauri capitalising on a key break in the second to seal the title. Despite the defeat, Dhamne’s performance throughout the week marked a significant step forward in his career.

Dhamne had reached the final with an impressive semi-final win over France’s Antoine Ghibaudo, defeating the higher-ranked opponent 6-4, 6-3. Entering the tournament ranked outside the top 400, the teenager consistently raised his level against experienced players.

His run in Shymkent makes him the first Indian since Sumit Nagal in 2024 to reach a Challenger-level final. More importantly, it highlights the emergence of a promising singles talent for India on the international circuit.

With a projected rise into the top 400, Dhamne’s performance is expected to open up more opportunities on the Challenger circuit, marking an important milestone in his transition to higher levels of professional tennis.
