Marathon batting session, tedious fitness runs: Suryakumar Yadav works hard for India comeback

Former India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is aiming to make a comeback to the national team. The 35-year-old is working hard in the nets. Yadav took to social media to upload a video of running and batting at the Vasco Paranjape Cricket Country. “Sunday was fun. Quick run, Batted around 1000 balls for 3 hours. Felt good,” he wrote.

The player will be getting ready for the domestic season, which is slated to begin shortly. Surya was last seen playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026, where he scored 270 runs from 13 innings with just two fifties. The second of which came in the final game of the season against Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 60 runs.

After the IPL season, the player was stripped of his captaincy and also dropped from the Indian team. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, “With regards to Surya, obviously, it’s a tough one… having just won the World Cup. But as it happens after most World Cups, we try and reassess what the best way forward is.”

Agarkar also stated the batter’s own form contributed to his exit from the team. The former India pacer also stated that the team management and selectors have taken this call keeping in mind the 2028 LA Olympic Games and the T20 World Cup in the same year. Team India achieved a lot of firsts under Yadav’s captaincy, which lasted close to two years.

They stayed unbeaten during the course of his captaincy tenure. India became the first side to defend the T20 crown successfully. They also became the first side to win the title thrice and became the first home team to win the trophy. Under his captaincy, the Indian side also went on to win the Asia Cup 2025 tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav’s numbers so far

The 35-year-old has played one Test, 37 ODIs, and 113 T20Is for India. It is in the shortest format where he did well, scoring over 3000 runs with the bat at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 162, along with four centuries and 25 fifties.

The batter’s best year was in 2022, when he accumulated 1164 runs from 31 games with two centuries and nine fifties. This year, he played 14 games, scoring 484 runs at an average of 44, with four half-centuries.
