Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion and 39 years old, experienced physical difficulties throughout the match, including movement issues and vomiting on court.
Despite winning the third set and having a strong record in five-set matches, Djokovic was unable to overcome Navone’s resilience. Navone, who had a prior hard court tour-level record of 12-29, displayed composure during the deciding set and sealed the victory after chasing down a drop volley to play the ball into an open court. The two players exchanged a warm gesture at the net.
Djokovic, who has won 101 ATP titles, signed autographs for fans before departing Arthur Ashe Stadium. His loss eliminates his chance to pursue a record 25th Grand Slam title at this tournament.
In related US Open first round action, Daniil Medvedev defeated Hugo Gaston 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 14 minutes. Medvedev will face either wild card Sebastian Gorzny or Raphael Collignon in the second round.
Djokovic’s exit follows the withdrawal of world number one Jannik Sinner due to injury and sees defending champion Carlos Alcaraz enter the tournament after an extended break from competition.
