Satya Niketan Building Collapsed: The tragic building accident that occurred on September 6 in Satya Niketan area of Delhi has shaken the entire capital. After this major accident, Delhi Municipal Corporation has lost its sleep and the administration now appears to be fully prepared. Different teams of the corporation have taken to the streets and increased the scope of investigation. Within the last forty-eight hours, the administration has conducted an intensive survey of about eleven hundred paying guest houses in different areas of the city. More than twenty thousand students are living and studying at all these places. Now legal action is being taken against those who ignore the rules and illegal constructions which are being carried out keeping the life and safety of the students at stake.
Corporation took prompt action after the accident
Immediately after the Satya Niketan incident, the Municipal Corporation had made it clear that any landlord or operator who disregards the rules will not be spared. According to the latest data shared by the corporation, twenty-four illegal properties have been demolished by using bulldozers in the last two days. Along with this, seven properties which openly violated the rules have been completely sealed. Thirty-five show cause notices have also been served to other building owners who ignored the rules. This strict action of the Municipal Corporation has created panic among those people who were charging huge rent from students by converting their houses into PG without valid map and approval.

Strict orders to demolish dangerous structures
The administration has issued show cause notices related to sealing of six properties in a two-day special campaign. Apart from this, final orders have also been issued to demolish twenty-seven properties seriously violating the rules. This action of Delhi Municipal Corporation has become very fast at such a sensitive time when the accident in Satya Niketan has raised serious questions on the strength of the buildings and the safety of the students. After such incidents coming to light every day, parents are also extremely scared about the safety of their children. To remove this fear and avert any major danger in future, the corporation has adopted this tough stance.
Demolition work of the building adjacent to the accident site
The process of demolishing the second building adjacent to the multi-storey building that collapsed on September 6 in Satya Niketan has also been started. The collapse of the main building had badly affected the walls and pillars of the adjacent structure. Engineers had expressed deep concern about its strength. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar had already made it clear that the building adjacent to the building that was the victim of the accident has become very weak and can collapse any time. Keeping in mind the safety of the people nearby and the rescue team, it is being demolished very carefully and in a phased manner so that there is no damage to other buildings nearby.
Strict investigation of PG and residential buildings in the capital
After this major accident, the entire attention of the Municipal Corporation has now focused on the investigation of paying guests and multi-storey buildings going on across the capital. The main objective of the corporation is to find out whether the master plan and safety standards were followed at the time of construction of the properties where hundreds of youth are living. Are there adequate fire safety arrangements and are the stairs wide enough to allow exit in case of emergency? More strict action may be taken in the coming days against all the hostel and PG operators running without registration and contrary to the set standards.
Attack on illegal construction continues for three months
The Municipal Corporation has been continuously fighting against unauthorized construction in Delhi for the last three months. The latest action taken report of the corporation shows that between June 1st and August 31st, demolition action has been taken against illegal construction on nine hundred sixty nine properties. Apart from this, 471 properties have been sealed between June 1st and September 8th. During the same period, show cause notices were issued in more than fifteen hundred cases of unauthorized construction and formal orders were given to demolish seven hundred and fifty-three properties.

This ongoing campaign against illegal construction is continuously progressing. Even on September 8, Municipal Corporation teams carried out demolition action on seventeen properties in different wards and immediately sealed five properties. On the same day, nine new show cause notices related to illegal construction and two related to sealing were issued. The Municipal Corporation clearly says that this campaign will continue without any stop in order to make the capital safe and to curb unauthorized constructions.
