Migration Crisis: Europe is once again facing a major migration crisis. Spain is sending troops to strengthen security in the Ceuta area after thousands of migrants swam from Morocco on Thursday. At least 15 people drowned trying to reach Ceuta. Local authorities had requested assistance from Madrid after a recent increase in border crossing attempts, but on Thursday, the situation spiraled out of control and border security appeared to have collapsed completely.
Situation bad at the border
Given the gravity of the situation, the Spanish government has deployed the army, civil guards, and additional police forces. The administration says the situation at the border is unusual and requires additional resources to restore order. Meanwhile, talks are underway between Spain and Morocco, and both countries have agreed to increase coordination to expedite the return of illegal migrants.

Who encouraged migrants?
Spain’s Supreme Court ruled this month that migrants intercepted at sea while trying to reach Ceuta or Melilla (another Spanish territory) cannot be immediately returned to Morocco. Spain’s Interior Ministry accused human trafficking gangs of taking advantage of the situation to “encourage the arrival of undocumented migrants.”
