Minimum Age For Railways Station Master Increased To 20 Yrs From 18 Yrs

The Railway Board has raised the minimum age for direct recruitment to the post of Station Master from 18 to 20 years. The revised rule came into effect on October 7, 2026, following an amendment to the Indian Railway Establishment Manual.

The change aligns the eligibility criteria more closely with the educational qualifications required for the position and will affect prospective candidates applying under future recruitment notifications.

What Has Changed in the Recruitment Rules?

Previously, candidates aged between 18 and 30 years could apply for direct recruitment to Station Master posts, subject to the other eligibility conditions. Under the revised rules, the minimum age has increased to 20 years, while the maximum age remains 30 years.

The Railway Board communicated the amendment to the general managers of zonal railways and production units, as well as the chairpersons of Railway Recruitment Boards. The revised age limit applies from the date of the official communication.

Why Has the Minimum Age Been Increased?

The All India Station Masters’ Association (AISMA) has welcomed the decision, describing it as a long-pending demand.

According to the association, candidates applying for direct recruitment must hold a graduation degree. Since most students complete their undergraduate education at around 20 years of age or later, the earlier minimum age of 18 was considered inconsistent with the educational requirement.

AISMA secretary general Sharad Chandra Purohit said the association had raised several concerns regarding the working conditions of Station Masters with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The association considers the revised age requirement a step towards making recruitment rules more practical.

What Happens to Ongoing Recruitment?

The Railway Board has clarified that recruitment processes for which a centralised employment notification had already been issued will continue under the earlier rules.

This means candidates participating in recruitment drives notified before the amendment will be governed by the existing eligibility conditions applicable to those notifications. The revised minimum age will apply to recruitment covered by the updated rules.

Candidates should therefore check the specific recruitment notification and its eligibility cut-off date rather than relying solely on the general age limit.

What Should Aspiring Candidates Do?

Candidates planning to apply for Station Master positions should monitor official Railway Recruitment Board announcements for upcoming vacancies. They should also verify the prescribed educational qualifications, age calculation date, applicable age relaxations and other eligibility requirements in each notification.

The increase in the minimum age from 18 to 20 years is a targeted change to the recruitment framework. While it may affect younger applicants, the Railway Board says the amendment brings the age requirement closer to the graduation qualification expected for the role.

The revised rule marks an important update for railway job aspirants. With the upper age limit remaining at 30 years and previously notified recruitment processes continuing under the old rules, candidates should carefully review the applicable notification before applying.
