New Delhi . It is not considered easy for Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi to get a second term in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). His current tenure as ACC chairman is to end in April 2027. Under the rules, there is an option to extend the tenure of the Chairman, but for this the support and consent of the Member Boards is required. In such a situation, the changing equations of Asian cricket in the coming months will play an important role in whether Naqvi gets another chance or his innings ends here.
The post of Chairman in ACC runs under a two-year rotation system. Under this arrangement, Mohsin Naqvi took command of the organization in 2025. His tenure is till April 2027. After this the process of selection of the new chairman will begin. Although there is a provision to extend the tenure of the current Chairman, the support of the member countries will be most important for this.
In the current situation, the chances of Mohsin Naqvi getting support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI are considered less. Apart from this, it has also come to light that there is not much enthusiasm among other member boards of ACC regarding his second term. However, BCCI has not yet made public any official decision regarding Naqvi's tenure or possible extension.
There is also an example in the history of ACC of the Chairman getting an extension. Jay Shah took over the responsibility of ACC chairman from the then Bangladesh Cricket Board chief Nazmul Hasan in January 2021. Later, with the consent of the member countries, his tenure was extended till 2024. In this way, Jay Shah remained ACC Chairman for almost four years and became one of the longest serving officials of the organization.
After Jay Shah in December 2024, Shammi Silva of Sri Lanka took over the responsibility of ACC for some time. After this, in 2025, this post came to Mohsin Naqvi. Now with the end of his tenure in April 2027, the question of selection of a new chairman will arise before ACC.
Mohsin Naqvi's name has also been linked to trophy controversies in the two recent Senior Asia Cups. India won the Men's Asia Cup title by defeating Pakistan in 2025. After this the Indian team did not accept the trophy from Naqvi. The players celebrated the victory with the champion banner and completed the ceremony without the trophy.
The Indian team adopted a similar approach in the 2026 Women's Asia Cup also. After the match ended, the team waited for a long time on the field and discussed with BCCI officials. After this the Indian players returned to the dressing room and the awards ceremony ended without their presence. After both these incidents, the debate regarding Naqvi's role as ACC chairman intensified.
In such an environment, it is considered difficult to get BCCI's support for his second term. However, the final decision will depend on the stance of the member countries and the upcoming talks. As April 2027 approaches, it will become clear whether Mohsin Naqvi continues to lead the ACC or the organization moves towards a new chairman.
