Monsoon Forecast – Dark Clouds Will Hover, Possibility of Storm and Rain in 13 States
New Delhi: With temperatures soaring across most parts of the country, the heat has made life miserable for people, leaving everyone in distress. From the Delhi-NCR region to states like UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan, the scorching heat has left residents drenched in sweat. Conversely, unseasonal rainfall continues to wreak havoc in the northeastern states, causing the situation to deteriorate further.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder across 13 states. Furthermore, an alert has been issued warning of strong winds blowing at speeds ranging from 50 to 70 kilometers per hour.
1. Severe Heatwave Warnings (North & Central India)
The plains are entering a critical phase where temperatures are expected to reach peak summer levels early.
- Temperature surge: Values between 40°C and 45°C are projected for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP, and Madhya Pradesh.
- Delhi Alert: A formal heatwave alert begins April 24with temperatures expected to climb above 42°C.
- Duration: Intense heatwave conditions will persist for at least the next 4 to 5 days (April 24–28).
2. Heavy Rainfall & Storm Alerts (Northeast)
While the north burns, the northeast is facing atmospheric instability leading to hazardous rain.
- High Alert States: Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are under a heavy rainfall alert till April 26.
- Extreme Winds: Expect squally winds ranging from 50 to 70 km/h accompanied by lightning and thunder.
- Hailstorm Risk: Isolated hailstorms are possible in Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura.
3. “Relief” Rain for Delhi and the Hills
A shift in the weather is expected toward the end of the week, which may bring temporary respite from the heat.
- The Hills: Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are forecast for. Himachal Pradesh (April 25–28) and Uttarakhand (April 25–26).
- The Plains: Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana may see scattered rainfall between April 25 and April 28potentially cooling the surface after the initial heatwave peak.
- Wind Activity: Dust storms or strong surface winds (30–40 km/h) are likely during this transition.
Heavy Rainfall Warning for These States
According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected in several states across Northeast India. The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, valid until April 26. An additional alert has been issued for these regions regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds.
Rainfall is also expected in Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura until April 26. Along with this, isolated instances of hailstorms may also occur. The possibility of strong winds accompanied by thunder and lightning has also been forecast for Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha.
Possibility of Rain in Punjab and Delhi
The IMD has forecast light rainfall in Himachal Pradesh from April 25 to 28, and in Uttarakhand on April 25 and 26. Scattered to moderate rainfall is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi between April 25 and 28. There is also a possibility of winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour in these regions.
Heatwave Alert for Several States
The IMD has forecast the likelihood of severe heatwave conditions sweeping across the plains of Northwest, Central, and East India over the next 4 to 5 days. Temperatures are expected to soar to between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. An alert has been issued warning of severe heatwave conditions across various regions between April 24 and April 26.

Know Delhi’s Weather
The heat spell in Delhi is intensifying, with temperatures already having crossed the 40°C mark. The weather is expected to remain predominantly clear over the next two days. During the day, surface wind speeds are likely to range between 15 and 25 km/h. The IMD has issued a heatwave alert for Delhi starting April 24, with temperatures projected to rise above 42°C. Light to moderate rainfall is possible until April 28.
