More startups and UPSC toppers in small cities than Delhi-Mumbai, how to understand?
It is discussed in the country that more startups are opening in big metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore because there are more facilities here. It is also discussed that due to good coaching in big cities, UPSC toppers also emerge from here. But, these figures are not correct.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Sunday that now most of India’s startup founders and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) toppers are from tier II and III cities. He said that this shows how big a role technology and digital connectivity has played in providing equal opportunities to all across the country.

Toppers emerging from small towns
Speaking at a function organized to honor the topper students of class 10th and 12th in different schools of Jammu region, the minister said that a similar trend is being seen in Jammu and Kashmir. Giving an example, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office said that the candidate who secured 11th rank at the all India level in the UPSC examination is from the border district of Poonch, while successful agri-startups and entrepreneurs are emerging from districts like Doda and Budgam. This reflects the growing talent and ambitions of people in the region.
50 percent startups are from small cities
In his address, he said, ‘Out of about 2.30 lakh startups in the country, about 50 percent are in tier II and III cities. This reflects the growing spirit of entrepreneurship even outside the big cities. Jitendra Singh said that today 35 to 40 percent of startups are run by women, which reflects the increasing participation of women in India’s innovation-led growth.
Similar trend in the field of civil service also
He said that a similar trend is being seen in the field of civil services, where many of the best performing candidates of the country are now emerging from small towns and districts. He said that this is a big change from the earlier trend, when big cities were traditionally considered the main centers of best education and career opportunities.

Benefits of facilities and employment opportunities
Emphasizing the impact of technology, the Minister said that the widespread availability of digital tools and internet connectivity has created equal opportunities for aspiring youth across the country. He said that there are more than 100 crore smartphone users in India, so students can now avail affordable and easily available education facilities and employment opportunities, regardless of their geographical location.
Earlier in another program, the Union Minister highlighted the achievements of the Department of AYUSH in Jammu and Kashmir and said that considerable progress has been made in strengthening the healthcare infrastructure and expanding AYUSH services in this Union Territory.
