Mumbai: ED takes major action on properties worth Rs 500 crore of Dawood’s close aide Iqbal Mirchi in Mumbai.

Mumbai: Underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim and drug smugglers close to Iqbal Mirchi The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken major action against Mumbai properties worth crores of rupees. ED has seized three buildings named Sea View, Mariam Lodge and Rabia Mansion located in Worli area. The estimated value of these properties is said to be around Rs 500 crore.

According to ED, these three properties are spread over an area of approximately 4970.41 square meters i.e. about 1.2 acres. The investigating agency claims that these properties were purchased through a partnership firm in the year 1986 and were later kept in the name of a trust.

The ED has alleged that the “Sir Mohammed Yusuf Trust” was merely used as a front. The agency also says that in the year 2005, these properties were freed from attachment by giving wrong information.

In this case, the special PMLA court has given an important verdict and declared Iqbal Mirchi’s family as absconding economic offenders. After this, permission was given to confiscate these properties under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEO Act). Even before this, these properties were attached under PMLA law.

Under the FEO Act, after an accused is declared an absconding economic offender, the investigating agencies get the right to seize his properties and auction them. It is believed that ED may soon take a decision regarding the auction of these properties.

In the last few months, ED has also taken action against many other properties of Iqbal Mirchi and people associated with him. These also include a plot of closed Meena Hotel in Juhu and a farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar.

Iqbal Mirchi died in London in 2013. However, the special court has declared his wife Hajra and his two sons Asif and Junaid as absconding economic offenders. ED has also applied in the court to confiscate his properties.

This action of ED is being considered a major blow to the economic network related to the underworld in Mumbai.
