Mumbai Indians top IPL valuations, leave RCB and CSK behind

Five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians is the most valued franchise according to a latest report published by Sportico. In terms of overall sports, NFL’s major Dallas Cowboys and former NBA champions Golden State Warriors lead the list. The Cowboys are valued at $15.5 billion, while the Warriors are at $14.5 billion.

MI, owned by Reliance, is valued at $2.1 billion, despite its lack of success in the last few years. The team was purchased by Indian billionaire Mukesh Kumar for close to $112 million ahead of the opening season of the IPL in 2008. After an underwhelming five seasons, the team managed to win its first title in 2013 under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. They went on to win four more IPL trophies, the last of which came in 2020. The team has also seen the emergence of Indian talents like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Tilak Varma, and Naman Dhir.

Current IPL holders Royal Challengers Bengaluru are placed second with their valuation at $1.85 billion. After being unsuccessful in the first 17 seasons of the league, the team has managed to become the third side in the history of the league to successfully defend their title.

Chennai Super Kings are third on the list with a $1.75 billion valuation. The failure to make it to the playoffs for three seasons has seen the side change its coaching staff. Zaheer Khan has been named the new head coach, with Mohit Sharma as the bowling coach. Gareth Batty and Albie Morkel are the assistant coaches.

Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders are fourth in the list with a valuation of $1.73 billion, followed by Delhi Capitals at $1.7 billion. Kolkata have won the IPL title thrice, the last of which came in 2024 under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.
