Mumbai-Pune bullet train to cut travel time to 48 minutes, says Ashwini Vaishnaw
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said that India’s high-speed rail programme is progressing rapidly, announcing that the first section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is expected to become operational next year.
Speaking in Pune, Vaishnaw said the country’s bullet train infrastructure development has reached a stage where India now possesses the capability to build and expand high-speed rail corridors on its own.
First Mumbai-Ahmedabad Section To Open Next Year
The minister said that the inaugural section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor will begin operations in 2027marking a major milestone in India’s first bullet train project.
According to Vaishnaw, construction work on the corridor is progressing at a fast pace, with significant progress achieved across various segments of the route.
He noted that the project represents a major step forward in modernising India’s transportation infrastructure and strengthening connectivity between major economic centres.
Mumbai-Pune Corridor To Reduce Journey To 48 Minutes
Highlighting future expansion plans, Vaishnaw said the Prime Minister has approved a high-speed rail corridor connecting Mumbai and Pune.
The proposed 170-kilometre corridor is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to approximately 48 minutescompared to the current travel duration by road and conventional rail.
The minister said the improved connectivity would effectively bring the two cities closer together, creating stronger economic, industrial and social integration.
High-Speed Rail To Strengthen Economic Growth
Vaishnaw stated that the Mumbai-Pune corridor would emerge as a major economic zone due to faster mobility of people, businesses and investments.
He said enhanced connectivity would support industrial development, improve logistics efficiency and strengthen commercial activity across western India.
According to the minister, the project is expected to contribute significantly to regional growth by linking major urban centres through world-class transport infrastructure.
Pune-Hyderabad Travel Time To Be Reduced
The Union Minister also outlined plans for a future high-speed rail connection between Pune and Hyderabad.
He said the approximately 500-kilometre route could reduce travel time between the two cities to around 2 hours and 8 minutessignificantly improving connectivity between Maharashtra and Telangana.
The proposed corridor is expected to support business travel, industrial cooperation and economic integration across the region.
Integrated Economic Ecosystem Envisioned
Vaishnaw said the expanding high-speed rail network would help create an interconnected economic ecosystem linking cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vapi and Thane.
He noted that improved connectivity between these major urban centres would encourage investment, strengthen trade links and facilitate the movement of skilled professionals and businesses.
The minister added that the development of bullet train corridors reflects India’s growing capabilities in advanced rail technology and large-scale infrastructure development.
Focus On Modern Rail Infrastructure
The government’s push for high-speed rail remains a key component of its broader infrastructure strategy aimed at improving connectivity and supporting long-term economic growth.
With construction continuing on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor and new routes under consideration, India’s bullet train programme is expected to play an increasingly important role in the country’s transportation network in the coming years.
