Mumbai Underground Highway: The first underground highway to be started in ‘Ya’ area of Mumbai; A 40 minute journey in just 5 minutes!

Mumbai Underground Highway | A big and historic news has come out for Mumbaikars. Mumbai, which is plagued by traffic jams, will soon get its first underground highway. This subway, which is being built between Orange Gate and Marine Drive in Mumbai, is going to change the face of the city’s transport. Interestingly, the tunneling of this ambitious project has now picked up speed and around 250 meters of underground tunnel has been constructed.

This project, implemented through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is considered to be a new chapter in Mumbai’s future transport. The work is considered to be very challenging as the tunnel is constructed under densely populated areas, large buildings, railway lines and metro networks. But with the help of state-of-the-art Slurry Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), this difficult task is progressing successfully. Mumbai Underground Highway

The biggest feature of this underground highway is the huge savings in travel time. Currently, it takes around 40 minutes to travel from Orange Gate to Marine Drive during peak hours, but once the subway is launched, the same journey will be completed in just 5 minutes. This will save a lot of time, fuel and stress of the drivers.

Almost 4.8 km long twin tunnels are being constructed in this project. Each tunnel will have two vehicle lanes and one emergency lane and vehicles will be able to travel at a speed of 80 kmph. Emergency routes will also be constructed at every 300 meters for safety. Mumbai Underground Highway

Interestingly, this entire subway is being built at a depth of about 50 meters underground. It has been designed in such a way that there will be no impact on the daily operations of the upper city. According to MMRDA, the project will not only reduce traffic congestion, but also reduce vehicular pollution and fuel costs.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the project as a big step towards a world-class transport system for Mumbai, while Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde explained that the underground roads will be essential for future traffic growth.
