There are reports of major upheavals taking place behind the scenes in the politics of West Bengal. The political environment of the state is continuously changing since the results of the assembly elections were announced. Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is facing setbacks due to internal resignations and several setbacks one after the other. Meanwhile, a very big news is coming out from the politics of Bengal, due to which the discussion of leaving Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee and forming a ‘new Trinamool Congress’ party has intensified.
There is discussion in political circles that due to internal discontent, activities of rebel leaders and secret meetings of some MLAs, political situation like Maharashtra may be repeated in Bengal.
Action against whistleblower MLA and spark of rebellion
TMC has taken strict action against its two MLAs for openly raising their voice against the party, i.e. playing the role of ‘whistleblower’, regarding the alleged signature issue in the party. In this matter, TMC has expelled Ritabrata Bandyopadhyay and Sandipan Saha from the party. According to the information received, after the expulsion of these two MLAs from the party, a shocking thing has come to light that a new group and a new party is being formed within the party to support the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.
Internal conflict is increasing
With the expulsion of these two MLAs, the internal turmoil in TMC has now come to light. It is clear from these developments that everything is not going well in the party after the elections. The expelled MLAs and some angry factions of the party are coming together and preparing to create a new political option, in such a situation, there is every possibility that problems for Mamata Banerjee will increase in the coming days. The talk of this possible new party has created a huge stir in the political circles of West Bengal.
According to sources, about 15 to 20 MLAs are in touch with such leaders, who are trying to put pressure on the leadership by forming a pressure group in the party. However, none of these MLAs have openly declared rebellion.
Why comparison with Maharashtra?
What is happening in Bengal right now is being compared with the politics of Maharashtra. In 2022, Eknath Shinde had rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray, causing a major split in Shiv Sena. Later Shinde faction was considered the real Shiv Sena.
Then, Ajit Pawar weakened Sharad Pawar’s hold by creating a split in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In both cases, the situation started with closed-door meetings, resentment among MLAs and growing anger against the leadership.
Similar discussions are taking place in Bengal also. The formation of separate power centers in TMC and the resentment among the leaders after the election defeat have given further fuel to these speculations.
Will there really be a split in TMC?
According to political analysts, at present there are less chances of a rebellion like Maharashtra in the West. This is because till now no big group has openly opposed the leadership. Any split will require the support of a large number of MLAs and organizational leaders. Nevertheless, the expulsion of two MLAs, Mamata Banerjee’s public allegation of division in the party, and continuous reports of resentment clearly show that the TMC leadership is taking this threat seriously.
If more MLAs openly support the rebel leaders in the coming days, it could be a big change in the politics of West Bengal. Right now, all eyes are on Mamata Banerjee’s next steps and the ongoing turmoil within the party.
