Naya Raipur Health And Pharma Hub : A new health ecosystem is being developed in Nawa Raipur Atal Nagar, the capital of Chhattisgarh by combining healthcare with pharmaceutical industry, medical education, research and medical tourism. A proposed Medicity of around 5,000 beds and a 141-acre Pharma Park are the main pillars of this initiative. Besides, the project to set up a new medical college and 800-bed hospital at Koni in Bilaspur will also extend the benefits of this expansion to the state's second largest city. 5,000 bedded Medicity
About 200 acres of land has been earmarked for Medicity in Nawa Raipur at Sector 37. In December 2024, the Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai-led government had announced plans to develop about 5,000 bedded health facilities through private participation. This scheme has been approved by the state government recently and the work of the project has started.
The project will include facilities like multi-specialty hospitals, medical colleges, diagnostic centres, student hostels, hospices and hotels. The project aims to develop critical illness treatment, superspecialty services, medical education and research facilities in a single ecosystem. Considering Nawa Raipur's proximity to the airport as well as road and rail connectivity, there are also plans to link this medicity with medical tourism.
141 Acres Pharma Park
Along with Medicity, a 141 acre Pharma Park is being developed at Village Tuta, Sector 22 in Nava Raipur. The infrastructure development of this park is expected to cost around Rs.
10 companies manufacturing drugs, medical devices, assembling devices, ventilators and other medical devices have shown interest in setting up their manufacturing plants here. In the first phase, 24 developed plots will be allotted. Production is expected to start in these industries in the next two years. Plug-and-play infrastructure, shared-use facilities and logistics arrangements are being developed here for the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.
The response of investors in the pharma sector is also increasing. Under the Industrial Development Policy 2024-30, the state has received investment proposals worth Rs 992.53 crore in the pharmaceutical sector in the last 18 months. Of these, four projects worth around Rs 216 crore are in various stages of implementation. Seven plots have been allotted in Pharma Park.
Apart from pharmaceutical manufacturing, the park is also likely to provide opportunities for the expansion of ancillary industries such as medical devices, packaging, quality control, warehousing, cold chain and logistics.
Emphasis on research with investment
Chhattisgarh's Industrial Development Policy 2024-30 has given priority to the pharmaceutical and medical equipment sectors. Concessions like investment subsidy, interest subsidy, refund of net State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) and 100 per cent exemption in stamp duty have been provided.
Besides, research and development (R&D), clinical trials, patents, technology procurement and quality certifications are also being encouraged.
Apart from doctors, the expansion of the health and pharmaceutical sector can also increase employment opportunities in the fields of nursing, paramedical services, diagnostic centers, medical technology, hospital management and health information technology (healthcare IT). At the same time, Pharma Park is also likely to boost businesses related to packaging, quality control, warehousing, cold chain and supply chain.
800 bedded hospital in Bilaspur
The expansion of the health sector in Chhattisgarh is not limited to New Raipur but new projects are also being developed in Bilaspur. A new medical college with 250 MBBS seats and an 800-bed hospital is being set up at Koni in Bilaspur at a cost of around Rs 1,400 crore.
The project plans to introduce superspecialty courses like DM and MCH along with MD-MS courses. Along with a hostel with a capacity of around 1,700 students, facilities such as residences for doctors and staff, guest house, auditorium, gymnasium, sports complex and rest house for patients' relatives are also proposed.
Superspecialty health facilities have already expanded in the Koni area and a cancer hospital project is also being developed. With the opening of a new medical college and hospital, the area is likely to develop into a major center of medical education and specialist treatment.
From treatment to industry
Medicity and Pharma Park in Nava Raipur and Medical College and Hospital in Bilaspur are important projects that combine healthcare, education, research, industry and employment. The concept of these initiatives is to increase the capacity of specialist treatment through Medicity, create trained manpower through medical colleges and promote the production of medicines and medical devices through Pharma Park.
These healthcare projects are developing a comprehensive ecosystem in Chhattisgarh that integrates treatment, medical education, research and manufacturing of healthcare equipment. This is expected to boost investment, industrial development and employment generation along with expansion of health facilities in the state.
