New Delhi. India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra made a spectacular comeback in the Lausanne Diamond League with a season-best throw of 88.05 meters. Neeraj achieved this distance in his second attempt and reached the top position in the competition for some time. However, Sri Lanka's young star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage left Neeraj behind by throwing 88.14 meters in the third attempt. In this way, Neeraj had to be satisfied with the silver medal and he remained just 9 centimeters away from the gold.
Neeraj's performance in Lausanne was also special because it is his longest throw this season. Earlier, his performance was not as per expectations and he was not able to cross the mark of 88 meters in 2026. His effort of 88.05 meters in Lausanne is being considered a big confidence-boosting performance for him. It was also his longest throw in more than a year after throwing 88.16m at the Paris Diamond League in June 2025.
Neeraj started the match with a throw of 83.54 meters. After this, in the second attempt, he suddenly improved his performance and achieved the top position by throwing the javelin to 88.05 meters. After this throw, Neeraj's victory seemed almost certain but Rumesh Pathirage gave a brilliant reply after some time. The Sri Lankan player made a throw of 88.14 meters in the third attempt and pushed Neeraj to second place by a margin of just 9 centimeters.
This victory was very special for Rumesh Pathirage. The 23-year-old Sri Lankan player is in great form at the moment and has been consistently performing well against Neeraj this season. Even before the victory in Lausanne, Pathirage had left Neeraj behind in two important matches. The rivalry between the two now seems to be shaping up to be a new story in Javelin Throw.
Grenada's Anderson Peters finished third with a best effort of 86.69 metres. He recorded this distance in his sixth and last attempt. Reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago finished fourth with 83.71 metres. In this way, the competition between Neeraj and Pathirage was much ahead of the other players.
Even though this performance in Lausanne could not convert into gold for Neeraj, crossing 88 meters is a very positive news for him. After struggling early in the 2026 season, he has now shown glimpses of his old form. This has increased their expectations regarding their preparation for the upcoming big competitions. Now the biggest challenge before Neeraj will be to maintain this performance continuously and reach close to the 90 meter mark in the coming matches.
The Lausanne Diamond League result may have been a close defeat for Neeraj but his throw of 88.05 meters shows that the Indian star is returning to his best form. On the other hand, the continuous challenge of Pathirage has made the competition in men's javelin throw more exciting. Neeraj will now be seen in the next big matches of the season with the confidence gained from this performance.
