USGS investigation revealed that a large part of the mountain slipped and fell into the Lhende River in China on the Nepal-Tibet border. Due to this, the flow of the river stopped and after accumulation of water and debris suddenly a strong flow occurred. This event generated as much energy as a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. Water from Lhende reached Bhotekoshi river, causing floods.

According to news agency AP, the flood engulfed many settlements and traffic came to a standstill in some areas. Experts say that due to rising temperatures in the Himalayan region, avalanche from glaciers could be a possible reason for this.
