New Delhi, 4 September 2026: The Central Government has taken a big decision to speed up the identification process of the people missing after the devastating floods in Nepal. The facility of DNA profiling will be made available to the first degree biological relatives (mother, father, son, daughter or siblings) of the missing people living in India, so that they can be compared with the unidentified remains found in Nepal.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, relatives living in India will be able to get their DNA profile prepared by giving their biological samples to the Central and State Forensic Laboratories (CFSL/SFSL), National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and NABL accredited labs. As per the advice of Nepal Police, 'Autosomal STR DNA Profile' will be prepared, which will later be sent to Nepali authorities through email.
It is noteworthy that due to the recent sudden flood in Nepal, the death toll has increased to 1259, while about 5000 people are still missing. Amidst the relief and rescue operations, this DNA testing will be of great help to the bereaved families in identifying their relatives.
