New achievement in heart treatment. Modern heart valve fitted to an elderly patient which lasted for 25 years. Complex procedure was successful.

New Delhi. Modern medical technology has made another important achievement in the treatment of heart diseases. The Cardiology Department of Tenderpalm Hospital has claimed to give a new life to a 78-year-old elderly patient by successfully completing a very complex heart procedure. The patient with severe heart problems has been fitted with a state-of-the-art heart valve that is expected to remain functional for approximately 25 years.

According to the hospital, the patient was suffering from several serious health issues like diabetes, coronary artery disease, benign prostate enlargement, pacemaker and severe aortic stenosis. Due to these diseases, the risk of traditional open heart surgery was quite high. In such a situation, the team of expert doctors decided to perform transcatheter aortic valve implantation and complex coronary angioplasty in a single session, adopting modern low-risk techniques.

During the procedure, a state-of-the-art transcatheter heart valve called the Edward Sapien Ultra Resilia was implanted in the patient. The biggest feature of this valve is its special fibrous tissue which is considered to be durable for a longer time than normal biological valves. Based on available scientific studies, its estimated age is said to be around 25 years. For this reason, it is also being promoted in simple language as a valve for the whole life.

Coronary angiography conducted during treatment revealed severe calcified blockage in the patient’s heart arteries. This condition is considered quite challenging to treat with simple angioplasty. Doctors removed the calcium deposits in the arteries with the help of modern orbital atherectomy technique and opened the blockage using intravascular lithotripsy technique. Subsequently two stents were successfully placed in the main artery LAD.

  • According to the hospital, performing both complex procedures in a single session reduced the overall risk to the patient and made the treatment more effective. The patient’s condition remained stable after the operation and he was discharged from the hospital after just three days.

Experts believe that due to modern interventional cardiology techniques, successful treatment is now possible even for elderly and high-risk patients for whom traditional open heart surgery is not considered a safe option. The hospital has described this achievement as one of the first complex procedures of its kind in Uttar Pradesh.

However, medical experts also clarify that the actual lifespan of any heart valve depends on many factors like the patient’s health condition, lifestyle, risk of infection and regular medical care. Therefore, treatment and results may be different for each patient.
