Vietnam’s emerging car manufacturer, VinFast, has pulled off a major and surprising masterstroke in its bid to establish its dominance in the global electric vehicle market. The company has officially unveiled the all-new incarnation of its most popular premium electric SUV, the New-Generation VinFast VF8, to the global market.

Powertrain and Driving Performance

In terms of technical changes, the new-generation VinFast VF8 is built entirely on a front-wheel drive (FWD) architecture. A powerful electric motor is installed on the front axle, generating a maximum power of 228 hp and a robust torque of 330 Nm. To enhance the driving experience, it offers three excellent driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport.

Compared to the previous model, the new model appears quite practical and efficient on paper. The previous model came with a massive 87.7 kWh battery pack and also offered the option of all-wheel drive. Compared to the previous FWD model, the new-generation engine produces 18 horsepower more power and 20 Nm more torque, making its acceleration and starting pickup even more aggressive.

Battery Options & Range

VinFast has adopted a completely different strategy this time around when it comes to range and battery life. The company has replaced the bulky battery pack with a new and lightweight 60.13 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

With this new setup, this electric SUV easily delivers a certified driving range (NEDC cycle) of 500 kilometers on a single full charge. While this range is approximately 62 kilometers less than the previous car’s 562 km range, the smaller battery significantly reduces the vehicle’s overall weight, improving its driving response and handling on turns.

To eliminate charging stress forever, this car fully supports high-speed DC fast charging. This allows this large SUV to charge from 10% to 70% in less than 30 minutes, saving you valuable time during long highway journeys.

Exterior Design

In terms of appearance, the new-gen VinFast VF8 has ditched its previous Pininfarina-style design for a sharper and more futuristic look. Its front profile feels aggressive and imposing, like a comic book villain’s helmet. The highlight of its front look is its eyebrow-shaped, sharp LED DRLs, which are interconnected with VinFast’s signature V-shaped lightbar in the center. Below this is a completely blanked-off, gloss-black front grille that seamlessly blends into the rugged bumper below.

From the side profile, the car’s appearance is quite dramatic, as its window lining rises sharply towards the rear. To give the car a sporty stance, it features an all-new design with 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. Gloss-black cladding is used on the wheel arches and lower door edges, further enhancing its premium look. The rear also features large taillights with the company’s signature V-shaped LED light strip and a sporty bumper that establishes its imposing road presence from a distance.

Interior and Premium Features

Step inside the car and find a completely revamped and incredibly quiet “software-defined” cabin. Like Skoda and Tesla, VinFast has significantly reduced the number of physical buttons in its interior. The large 15.6-inch screen found in the previous model has been replaced with a sleek 12.9-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, which provides a clean and elegant look to the cabin.

Furthermore, a dedicated digital driver display (instrument cluster) has also been added for the driver. For a completely fatigue-free ride, it features dual-zone automatic climate control and an advanced air purifier (Combi 1.0 filter) that ensures a clean cabin air quality.

Safety

VinFast has always met global standards in terms of safety. This new-generation car has been designed to achieve a robust 5-star safety rating in the ASEAN NCAP. It features a robust chassis architecture and a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to protect passengers throughout.

This magical safety circle includes life-saving features like Highway Assistant, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot Warning, which help prevent accidents. Additionally, advanced features like a high-definition 360-degree surround-view camera and an electronic parking brake are standard for safely maneuvering through narrow streets and difficult parking spaces.

Pricing and Launch

Regarding pricing, VinFast has set the starting price of the new-generation VF8 at 999 million Vietnamese Dong in its home market, Vietnam. Converted to Indian currency, this amount translates to approximately ₹36.5 lakh (approximately ₹36.5 lakh) before taxes and customs duties are included.

This price is slightly lower than the previous generation, making it more affordable for customers. As for its arrival in the Indian automobile market, the chances of this particular model launching in India are currently very low.
