New James Bond Update Shows Amazon Is Right to Stay Secretive
Fans have been wondering who the upcoming James Bond will be in the next era of the spy franchise, and while rumors continue to circulate, Amazon has stayed mostly secretive about that and any other information regarding the upcoming movie, and judging by the overreactions to many comments, it’s for the better.
Recently, while at the BAFTA TV Awards, Steven Knight (who created BBC’s Peaky Blinders and is writing the upcoming movie, which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve) was asked about the project. The writer of course said nothing, noting he was largely unable to talk about pretty much anything.
Knight’s comments, while not surprising, are a perfect example as to why Amazon MGM’s method for James Bond news should be mostly quiet until they are ready to release something.
Amazon keeping coy with James Bond news is the right move
Although news today is delivered via small updates and teases from companies, Amazon MGM is zigging a bit where others zag when it comes to the James Bond franchise. The iconic spy series has always remained secretive, and is even more so now that we’re about to enter an entirely new era, complete with a new Bond.
Rather than slowly release information about the movie, Amazon’s decision is the correct one. The company is likely waiting to release who will play the new Bond, as well as more of the upcoming movie, until all of this is set to go in one big announcement. Similar to the news that Villeneuve and Knight would be working on the movie, Amazon chose to bundle the news together to have much more to showcase when it was finally time.
On the topic of Bond himself, we still know little about the man who will play him. According to a recent report from The Guardian reporter Marina Hyde on The Rest is Entertainment podcast, Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, Frankenstein) seems to be the star with the best odds to become Bond. Hyde noted that she’s heard that Elordi is in “pole position” for the role and has slowly overtaken Callum Turner, who was previously the favorite, as the new potential man to play the role.
“I have to say — just the mere fact of me saying this means it won’t happen — but I’ve heard from a number of people that Jacob Elordi has kind of moved into pole position,” said Hyde. “Nobody has signed anything yet, which is interesting because Callum Turner is way out ahead, ” she added.
While we continue to scrutinize new bits of information that come in regarding the film, it’s important to remember that Amazon is playing the long game after acquiring the franchise in totality recently. Any news they release will be heavily theorized on, so waiting for more information is the surest way to make sure there’s very little to criticize until the movie comes out.
