Google Chrome Android Update: Google is going to make a major change to the Chrome browser with an aim to improve the browsing experience for its Android smartphone users. The company has announced that it is redesigning the notification permission interface. This new update will be rolled out with Chrome version 155. The main objective of this change is to free users from the annoyance of unnecessary notification pop-ups that appear immediately after opening a website.

Notification prompts will no longer interfere with browsing

In a blog post on Chrome for developers, Google clarified that the new interface will help users make informed decisions about notifications without interfering with their work. Chrome version 150 is currently available on the Play Store. According to Google, the new non-obtrusive UI is as simple as the previous version, but it significantly reduces the user’s daily browsing friction.

A new option will be added to the Site Controls menu

To permanently fix this problem, Google has added a new dedicated notification subscription option to Chrome’s Site Controls menu. Users who don’t want to respond immediately to a website’s first request can now easily unsubscribe later by going to Site Controls. If the user does not respond to the prompt, this new prompt will automatically expire.

Advise developers to display prompts with proper context

Google recommends developers that instead of asking for permission as soon as a webpage loads, it should be linked to a relevant action. For example, an e-commerce site may show a delivery notification prompt only after placing an order. Similarly, news sites can request notifications after a user has read 2 to 3 articles and travel portals can provide fare alerts after a flight search.
