The cordiality seen between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay during the development program organized in Chennai on Sunday became a topic of political discussion. The two leaders shared the stage at the inauguration of a section of the Phase II of the Chennai Metro. Apart from this, Vijay also got a prominent place in the inauguration and foundation stone laying program of projects worth about Rs 13 thousand crores in the state. Modi along with the Chief Minister flagged off the Metro and participated with him in programs related to development projects.
This meeting is also considered important because a day before this, Vijay had lunch with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Vijay's meetings with leaders of different political camps on two consecutive days have intensified speculation about the possible future strategy in Tamil Nadu.
Prime Minister gave important place to the Chief Minister
During the program, Prime Minister Modi showed warmth with Vijay. Both the leaders participated together in programs related to development schemes and discussed the importance of the projects. In his address, Modi mentioned his working experience with former Chief Ministers and various governments of Tamil Nadu. He said that despite the change of governments at the Center and leadership in the state, his resolve to develop Tamil Nadu and serve the people remains the same. Modi also talked about taking forward the development journey of the state along with Vijay. In terms of political analysis, this statement can be considered a sign of cooperation between the Center and the state, although it does not confirm any formal alliance.
Vijay presented his side on development plans
Chief Minister Vijay also spoke on the needs and future plans of the state in the program. He mentioned infrastructure projects and river linking plans. Along with this, expressed gratitude to the Center for the two high-speed rail corridors proposed for Tamil Nadu. During the program, Vijay also highlighted the potential benefits of the projects. The Prime Minister's listening to him carefully and the appearance of the two leaders on a common platform were among the main highlights of the meeting. For the state government, securing financial and administrative support from the Center can be important in carrying out development plans.
Meeting Rahul Gandhi increased political interest
Vijay had met Rahul Gandhi a day before the Prime Minister's program. According to reports, Rahul Gandhi had come to Chennai to attend an event and Vijay invited him for lunch at his residence. There was a conversation between the two leaders for about an hour. The political importance of this meeting has increased because Vijay's party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) is trying to strengthen its separate identity in the state politics. However, no official announcement was made regarding the topic of talks and any possible election agreement.
Can there be closeness between BJP and TVK?
After the warmth shown between Modi and Vijay, the question has started arising whether there can be a possibility of cooperation between Bharatiya Janata Party and TVK in future. Expanding the regional political base has been a challenge for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, while Vijay may need widespread support and administrative support for his new party. TVK, on the other hand, would like to maintain its political independence. It would therefore be premature to conclude an alliance merely on the basis of a joint programme.
The most important sign at the moment is that there seems to be scope for dialogue between the Central and Tamil Nadu governments on development issues. In the coming days, only the statements and political decisions of both the parties will clarify whether this remains limited to close administrative cooperation or becomes the basis of new equations in the politics of the state.
