This is how the Nobel Laureate of Literature is chosen
Every year the Swedish Academy invites nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Academy members, professors of literature and language, former Nobel laureates and prominent names of writers’ organizations can send their names. Authors cannot nominate themselves.
The Nobel Committee first prepares a list of about 15 to 20 names. After this, it is limited to 5 candidates by May. Then the 18 members of the Swedish Academy choose the final winner through voting.
Nomination lasts for 50 years confidential
The complete list of writers nominated for the Nobel in Literature is not made public. Information related to nomination remains confidential for 50 years. Therefore, complete information about which writers were nominated in 2026 will be revealed in 2076.
According to Nobel records, Indian writers like Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Sri Aurobindo, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay and RK Narayan were also nominated for the Nobel for Literature in different years.
