Rivoi News, August 31, 2026 – There is good news for mobile telecom operators and their customers. The Indian government has doubled the limit on radiation emitted from 5G radios. This step of the government will help Indian telecom operators to expand their 5G network coverage quickly. Telecom companies of the country had also been demanding for a long time to increase the Electromagnetic Field (EMF) limits for mobile networks.
In fact, the EMF limits implemented in India till now were much lower than the global standards. Which was directly affecting the network coverage experience of the users. Now with the doubling of EMF limits, users will get a much better network experience than the existing towers. Apart from this, it will help companies to optimize their 5G networks without installing additional towers and spending more capital expenditure (capex).
Limit doubled
According to a report by Telecom Talk, as per the amended rules, the power limit set for 5G Base Tower Stations (BTS) has been increased from the current 5 watts per square meter to 10 watts per square meter. This simply means that now the network signal from a single BTS tower will be able to reach twice the distance as before. With this, users will also see a lot of improvement in indoor coverage inside homes and buildings. Along with this, the total cost of network expansion for telecom companies will also reduce significantly.
5G coverage will be good
The telecom industry had long argued that old EMF limits were hindering the delivery of proper 5G coverage to users. Since the number of 5G devices is increasing rapidly in the market, this change was considered extremely necessary. This new decision will especially help Vodafone Idea (Vi) in providing its 5G network to more and more users with less capital. Apart from this, Airtel and Jio will also get direct benefits from this. As soon as this rule is implemented, their existing users will experience much better network connectivity and speed.
This increased radiation limit will become officially effective from next month. The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) had recommended a power density of 10 watts per BTS, whereas the Indian government had till now limited it to 5 watts.
