NSUI ruckus outside DD News office, burnt effigy and vandalized the premises, three workers arrested, angry over comments on Rahul Gandhi

NSUI Protest outside DD News Office: NSUI workers created a ruckus outside the DD News office located in Mandi House, New Delhi. Angered by the alleged objectionable remarks made by the anchor against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, NSUI and Congress workers burnt the anchor’s effigy and vandalized it near the premises. Taking action against the violence, Delhi Police has arrested three NSUI workers. At present, DD News under Prasar Bharati has not yet presented any official clarification on the entire controversy.

Police are currently busy identifying and searching for other suspects. NSUI has described these arrests as an attempt to suppress democratic protests, while the police have taken action on the basis of damage to property.

Actually the whole controversy started from a recent debate on DD News. It is alleged that anchor Ashok Srivastava had compared Rahul Gandhi to the ‘dust of Savarkar’s slippers’ during the discussion. NSUI has described this statement as an insult to a person holding a constitutional post and against the dignity of a public broadcaster. NSUI workers gathered outside the DD News office at D House over the alleged objectionable remarks against Rahul Gandhi. During the protest, angry workers burnt the effigy of the anchor. However, it became more tense when some protesters started vandalism. After this, the police took action and arrested three NSUI workers Rahul Kajla, Akhilesh Yadav and Satyam Kushwaha at Mandir Marg police station in connection with the violence.

NSUI termed the arrest of workers as politically motivated.

NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar has strongly condemned both the anchor’s remarks and the arrest of the workers. He alleged that government media platforms are being used for political propaganda. The organization has put forward three main demands before the administration – immediate release of the arrested activists, public apology by the anchor and fixing the accountability of government media institutions.

New debate on editorial independence

This incident has once again sparked debate about the impartiality and editorial independence of government broadcasters. Opposition parties are calling this an example of political bias. Critics argue that vandalism in the name of protest destroys the legitimacy of any movement. At present, security has been tightened in the Mandi House area and the police is investigating the matter further.
