Heavy rainfall has been recorded in many parts of Odisha due to the influence of the low pressure area formed in the north-western Bay of Bengal. In view of the worsening weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for five districts of the state.
According to IMD, due to this weather system being active, continuous heavy rains are expected in many districts of Odisha till August 26.
More than 200 mm rainfall recorded in many areas
Heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in many areas of the state in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday. At least two of these places recorded rainfall of more than 200 mm. The weather office has issued a red warning (take action) forecasting heavy rainfall for Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi and Navrangpura districts.
If we look at the rainfall data, Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district received extremely heavy rainfall of 345 mm, while Kashipur in Rayagada district recorded 212 mm of rainfall.
Low pressure area formed in Bay of Bengal
According to the IMD, the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal near the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts transformed into a low pressure area at around 5.30 am on Sunday.
Due to this, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert (be prepared for action) for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh and Rayagada districts.
Yellow alert in these districts and effect will remain till 26th August
The weather department has issued a yellow warning (be alert) for Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Gajapati and Ganjam districts. IMD has clarified that this weather trend and conditions will remain like this in the state till August 26.
Fishermen were advised not to go into the sea
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of strong winds at a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour and stormy weather in the Bay of Bengal as well as the coast of West Bengal and the adjacent coastal areas of Odisha till Monday.
In view of the increasing danger in the coastal areas, IMD has strictly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea around the Odisha coast till August 24.
