“One shot can take them out,” Trump says on Iran, but US holds back for talks

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again made strong remarks against Iran, stating that the United States has the capability to eliminate the country’s remaining leadership “with one shot.” He said, however, that Washington is refraining from such action in order to preserve ongoing diplomatic channels.

Speaking to Axios, Trump suggested that senior Iranian officials were vulnerable while gathered for the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but added that the US would not proceed as it would end prospects for negotiations.

Renewed Criticism Amid Tensions

Trump’s comments come amid heightened tensions following recent US-Israeli strikes that, according to earlier statements, resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In the days since, he has repeatedly criticized Iran’s leadership and economic situation.

He has also claimed that Iran is seeking to reach an agreement with Washington and described the country’s economy as weakened by inflation and instability.

Iran Responds With Strong Rebuttal

Tehran has reacted sharply to Trump’s remarks. Iran’s embassy in Armenia condemned his statements, accusing him of lacking “civilization, history and honor.” Iranian officials have warned that any further military action by the US or Israel would trigger a swift response.

Senior Iranian military figures also issued warnings ahead of the funeral ceremonies, urging Washington and Tel Aviv against what they described as potential miscalculations.

Diplomatic Talks Continue Despite Hostility

Despite the escalating exchange of rhetoric, indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran are ongoing in Doha. The discussions reportedly focus on maritime security, financial issues, and broader regional stability.

While some progress has been reported, major disagreements remain, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme. Another round of talks is expected after the ongoing funeral-related events conclude.

High Tensions Along Fragile Dialogue

Trump’s latest statements highlight the continuing contrast between public confrontation and behind-the-scenes diplomacy. Although both sides remain engaged in talks, the sharp rhetoric underscores the fragile nature of current US-Iran relations.
