According to the government, the availability of onion is satisfactory and the supply is expected to improve further in the coming months. According to government data, the all-India average model price of onion fell by 9.1 per cent to Rs 3,383 per quintal from Rs 3,721 per quintal between September 2 and September 11.

What is the government's plan?

Onion is being sold at Rs 35 per kg through government agencies like NCCF and NAFED through mobile vans and retail outlets. In addition, special 'Kanda Express' trains and road transport are being used to speed up supply to cities with high consumption. So far approximately 9,200 metric tonnes of onions have been transported through these routes.

Increased supply in the market

The arrival of onion in mandis has also increased compared to last year. Approximately 85.06 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of onion has been supplied to mandis across the country during the period from April 2 to September 11. This is an increase of 3.14% compared to 82.48 lakh MT in the same period last year.

In Maharashtra, which is a major onion producing state, the average market price fell from Rs 4,011 per quintal to Rs 3,842 per quintal during the period, i.e. a decline of approximately 4.2%. The government has also said that there is good availability of onion in the country at present. Production of kharif and late kharif crops is expected to improve, which may further increase supply in the coming months.

When will the general public get a lower rate?

The effect of the ongoing efforts of the government is expected to be felt soon in both wholesale markets and general retail markets. Onion prices are likely to drop by Rs 5 to 10 per kg in the next 1 to 2 weeks. As the harvesting of the new kharif crop is delayed by about 3-4 weeks in producing states such as Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh due to heavy rains this year, the arrival of the new crop in the market will pick up sharply in the last week of October or early November. As the supply in the market increases, the prices will continue to decrease.
