Online Death Threat to PM Modi Triggers Australian Police Investigation Before Melbourne Event
Australian authorities have launched an investigation into an alleged online death threat targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his scheduled visit to Melbourne next week, according to Australian media reports. Authorities have not announced any arrests, and the authenticity of the threat has not been independently verified.
The reported threat surfaced beneath a Facebook post promoting the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community event, which is scheduled to be held at Marvel Stadium on July 9 during the Prime Minister’s visit.
According to The Australia Todaythe threatening comment was posted from an account using the name “Abu Mustafa” and prompted an investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP). The publication reported that investigators have identified the IP address linked to the account and are examining whether any criminal offences were committed.
An AFP spokesperson told the publication that no arrests had been made at the time of reporting and declined to provide further details because of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also understood to have informed agencies responsible for coordinating security arrangements for the Prime Minister’s visit.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Australia from July 8 to July 10where he is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. His itinerary also includes participation in the India-Australia CEOs Forum and an address to members of the Indian diaspora at the Melbourne community event.
Security for the visit is expected to involve multiple Australian agencies, including the Australian Federal Police, state police and specialist protective units. Australian authorities routinely treat threats against visiting heads of government as matters of high priority.
Neither the Indian government nor the Australian government had issued an official statement specifically addressing the reported online threat as of Saturday evening. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not disclosed whether the individual behind the social media account has been identified or whether any charges are being considered.
