Pakistan’s problems increased amid insurgency, proposal to make Gilgit-Baltistan a separate state passed
Islamabad. Amidst the protests in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly has made a special demand from the Central Government of Pakistan. This new demand may increase Pakistan’s problems. In fact, the Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to give the status of temporary province to this hilly area. In this proposal, there has been a demand to give constitutional and political rights to the people of the area. According to media reports, this proposal was presented by MLA Jalal Ali Shah in the assembly session on Thursday. Members of both the ruling party and the opposition gave their full support to this proposal.
The resolution said that the ‘Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order’ of 2009 had created an elected assembly here. This promoted self-governance. After this, the order of the year 2018 gave the powers to make laws to the Assembly. This decision was taken on the recommendations of the committee headed by late leader Sartaj Aziz. Now the Assembly has demanded from the Central Government to implement the recommendations of this committee. This will give the people here an opportunity to elect their representatives in the National Assembly of Pakistan and get representation at the federal level.
On the other hand, India has always kept its stand clear on this matter. India says that the entire Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, are an integral part of India. New Delhi has always rejected Pakistan’s efforts to change the status of the region. India says that such steps of Pakistan have no legal basis and cannot change the ground reality.
