New Delhi. England has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series by defeating Pakistan badly in the first Test played at Headingley. This match played in Leeds ended on the third day itself. England defeated Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs. Pakistan team could not come close to the score of England's first innings even after combining both the innings. The host team had scored 409 runs in the first innings while Pakistan was all out for 171 and 135 runs.

Pakistan's troubles started on the very first day of the match. England won the toss and decided to bowl and its fast bowlers proved this decision completely correct. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tong broke the back of Pakistan's batting. Both took five wickets each in the first innings. Robinson gave 51 runs for 5 wickets while Tong gave 46 runs for 5 wickets. The entire Pakistan team was reduced to 171 runs.

Abdullah Shafiq struggled the most for Pakistan by scoring 61 runs. Apart from him, no other batsman could play a big innings. The England bowlers did not give the Pakistani batsmen a chance to score runs by consistently bowling on the right line and length. In difficult conditions, Pakistan's top and middle order looked completely ineffective against England's seam bowling.

After this, England did not give any relief to Pakistan even in batting. The host team scored a huge score of 409 runs and took a lead of 238 runs on the basis of first innings. Harry Brook played a brilliant inning of 91 runs. Jordan Cox scored 73 runs while captain Joe Root contributed 66 runs and Dan Lawrence contributed 51 runs. Pakistan's Ali Usman tried to stop England by taking five wickets but by then the host team was in complete control of the match.

Trailing by 238 runs, Pakistan needed a big second innings to save the match but the story was the same again. England's fast bowlers did not give Pakistan's batsmen a chance to settle on the crease. Pakistan had lost two wickets till 51 runs and after this the fall of wickets accelerated. The team lost four wickets for only 25 runs. Mohammad Rizwan did put up some resistance by scoring 41 runs but even his innings could not save Pakistan from defeat. The entire team was reduced to 135 runs.




  • In the second innings, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tong and Joffra Archer kept the pressure on Pakistan. Robinson and Tong took eight wickets each in the entire match. Robinson was named player of the match for his 8-wicket performance. England's bowlers took a total of 20 wickets in both the innings of Pakistan and this was the biggest story of this one-sided match.
