Pakistan have suffered a major blow ahead of the second Test against the West Indies after batter Shan Masood was ruled out of the match through injury. The left-hander was hit on the index finger of his left hand by a bouncer from seamer Jayden Seales during Pakistan’s first innings in Trinidad and will miss the second Test, which starts on Sunday at Queen’s Park Oval.
Masood had been one of Pakistan’s few positives in the opening match as he scored 109 in the first innings before managing only three in the second as Pakistan lost the match by 90 runs. The Pakistan batter has been a consistent performer for his country, scoring 113 and 88 in his previous two Tests.
England series is also under cloud for Pakistan
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has stated that Masood underwent scans and a clinical assessment following the injury, and that the team’s medical staff is managing his treatment. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also stated that the 35-year-old is “doubtful” for the first Test of Pakistan’s anticipated series against England that starts on August 19 in Leeds, Headingley.
“Pakistan Test batter Shan Masood has been ruled out of the second Test against the West Indies after suffering an injury to the index finger of his left hand during the first Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad,” the PCB said, as reported by the ICC.
“Shan has been placed under the care of Pakistan’s medical staff following a scan and clinical assessment.
His participation in the first Test match against England at Leeds starting on 19 August will be determined by his condition and clinical improvement.
In the meantime, he will be with the team,” they added.

Pakistan’s batting display in the first Test was disappointing, and his absence will be strongly felt. In addition to Shafique and Shakeel, two other seasoned campaigners, Abdullah Shafique and Saud Shakeel, were on standby to bolster Pakistan’s innings. In addition, Awais Zafar, an uncapped right-hander, is also in the running for a Test debut.
Masood has scored 2,765 runs in 47 Tests at an average of 31.06, including seven centuries and 14 half-centuries, with a career best of 156.
Pakistan, which is ninth in the ICC’s World Test Championship table and one spot above the West Indies, will be eager to win the second Test and climb up the rankings.
