Paper RCs will be abolished in UP from August 1st. Smart RCs will now be available like ATM cards, with QR codes to verify them in seconds.

Smart RC Uttar Pradesh: Vehicle owners in Uttar Pradesh are set to experience a major change starting August 1st. The state government and transport department will replace the traditional paper registration certificate (RC) with an ATM card-like Smart RC. The new RC will be equipped with a high-tech electronic chip and QR code, revealing complete vehicle information within seconds. The government believes this move will curb fraud and make traffic checking faster and more transparent.

It should be noted that, on the instructions of Minister of State for Transport Dayashankar Singh, the department has completed preparations to implement the new system. Smart RC will be mandatory for all new vehicles purchased from August 1st. Older vehicle owners can also convert their paper RC into a smart card through an online application.

The new Smart RC will be like an ATM card

Until now, the paper RC issued to vehicle owners was at risk of tearing, getting wet, or becoming damaged. The new Smart RC is made from sturdy plastic and is shaped exactly like a debit or credit card. This card will contain a secure electronic microchip and a QR code. The microchip will digitally store vital information about the vehicle and its owner, while scanning the QR code will allow officials to instantly access the vehicle’s records.

Chip and QR Code will prevent fraud

Additionally, information such as the engine number, chassis number, fuel type, vehicle owner’s name, and address will be stored in encrypted format on the Smart RC’s chip. This makes it extremely difficult to tamper with the data or create a fake RC. Traffic police and RTO officials will no longer have to manually enter lengthy registration numbers. They simply scan the QR code, and real-time information about insurance, PUC, and tax payments will be instantly displayed on the screen from a central server.

Old vehicle owners can apply online like this

For your information, if you already have a paper RC, there’s no need to worry. The government has also provided the option to upgrade it to a Smart RC. Vehicle owners can apply online by visiting the VAHAN portal and entering their vehicle number. After paying the prescribed fee, the process will be completed, and the new Smart RC will be sent directly to your home via speed post.

Experts believe that the Smart RC system will significantly curb activities such as the purchase and sale of stolen vehicles, forged documents, and the operation of multiple vehicles using the same license plate. Traffic checking will also be faster, safer, and more digital. This initiative is considered a significant step towards modernizing Uttar Pradesh’s transportation system.
