Paul Bettany sustained an unexpected injury while filming Disney+’s VisionQuest. The scene required him to portray Vision experiencing the effects of a device interfering with his brain. However, his attempt to make the performance convincing went a little too far.
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Bettany discussed the incident and admitted, “I was just wildly overacting,” before revealing that he “blew out about 10 blood vessels” in his left eye. The injury left his eye visibly bloody for approximately two weeks.
Bettany also remarked on the additional work the incident created for the production team. He said, “I think it must’ve cost production so much to take it out,” referring to the effort required to remove the redness during post-production.
The actor acknowledged that the experience taught him to be more restrained in his performances. He explained, “It was a lesson in less is more.” He also joked about being an actor with poor eyesight while playing a character called Vision. Bettany described himself as “kind of myopic” and admitted that he “can’t see a thing” without his glasses.
James Spader’s return as Ultron was another big highlight for Paul Bettany in VisionQuest
In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyBettany discussed reuniting with James Spader, who reprises his role as Ultron in VisionQuest. He recalled that showrunner Terry Matalas first approached him about bringing Spader back. Bettany was immediately enthusiastic about the suggestion. Recalling his reaction, he said, “F—! That’s a great idea!” He also felt Matalas’ unconventional approach to the series would convince James Spader to return.
Paul Bettany also commented on the philosophical themes explored in VisionQuest. He suggested that the series explores Vision’s identity and existence, including questions about the purpose of artificial intelligence. The actor also drew parallels with Frankenstein. He raised questions about Vision’s existence, including, “Who am I? Who made me? What am I for? What’s my purpose?”
Six episodes of VisionQuest are now available on Disney+, and two more episodes remain for the season.
