Prime Minister Modi’s statement regarding petrol and diesel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that when the global oil crisis deepened, the prices of crude oil had increased from about $ 70 per barrel to about $ 120 per barrel. Despite this, fuel supply in India continued continuously and there was no shortage of petrol and diesel on any day. He said that the government had taken several steps to reduce the impact of inflation on the common people. These also included a reduction in excise duty of up to Rs 10 per litre, due to which an attempt was made to provide relief to consumers.

Why did the price not decrease despite crude oil being cheap?

There has been a decline in the prices of crude oil in the international market for some time. OPEC+ countries have decided to increase production from August, which is expected to increase the supply in the global market. Due to this, Brent crude is trading at around $71.88 per barrel and WTI at around $68.58 per barrel. Apart from this, crude oil prices have also softened due to reducing tension between America and Iran and normalization of oil supply from the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this, the prices of petrol and diesel in the domestic market currently remain stable.

When can petrol and diesel become cheaper?

According to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, there is no situation yet to reduce the prices of petrol and diesel. He said that oil companies are currently refining expensive crude oil purchased two to two and a half months ago. At that time, oil prices were high and the cost of insurance and transportation had also increased significantly. He also said that if crude oil prices remain low in the international market for a long time, then relief in prices can be considered in future. At present, oil companies are also recovering their old costs.

Prices were increased four times in May 2026

In the month of May this year, the prices of petrol and diesel were increased on four separate occasions. On May 15, petrol became costlier by Rs 3 and diesel by Rs 3.29 per litre. After this, the prices were increased on 19th and 23rd May also. On May 25, once again petrol became costlier by Rs 2.61 and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre. There has been no change in prices since then.
