Piaggio preparing to create a stir in India: Bringing new budget scooters to compete with Activa and Jupiter
Automobile Desk: There is going to be tremendous competition in the coming days in the Indian two-wheeler market. Popular vehicles like Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter, which have been ruling the hearts of Indian customers till now, are now going to get direct competition. Italy’s famous automobile manufacturer Piaggio is preparing for a big entry in India’s commuter (general budget) scooter segment.
The company is working on a whole new scooter series, which is being prepared keeping in mind the needs of the Indian market.
There will be a grand entry in early 2027
According to media reports and company plans, Piaggio can introduce its new commuter scooter range in the first half of 2027.
Till now, Piaggio is mainly known in India for its premium brands – Vespa and Aprilia. These scooters are great in style and performance, but their price is a little high for customers with a common budget. Now the company will directly target the middle class and daily traveling riders through its new range.
These scooters will be prepared on the new platform
The most special thing about this new initiative is that Piaggio is developing an all-new made-in-India platform for it.
Local production: These scooters will be manufactured in India only, which will help in controlling their costs.
Global Exports: Initially the company’s focus will be solely on meeting the needs of Indian customers. However, in future, scooters made from this platform will also be exported to Africa and other foreign markets.
Special focus will be on budget and performance
Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter and Suzuki Access have been dominant in India for a long time. Piaggio plans to price its new models around these popular scooters.
By providing better mileage, strong body and modern features along with low price, the company wants to capture a large market share in this segment.
There will be a war between petrol and electric
Not only petrol, but the dominance of electric scooters (EVs) is also increasing rapidly in the Indian auto market. A huge jump has been seen in the sales of electric models like TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and Ather Rizta in the market.
For example, vehicles like the TVS iQube boast modern touchscreen displays, large boot space and a range of up to 200 kilometers on a single charge. In such a situation, the challenge for Piaggio will not only be from traditional petrol scooters but also from these high-tech electric vehicles.
What does this mean for customers?
With this step of Piaggio, the competition in the Indian two-wheeler market will become very interesting. In the coming times, customers will not only get more options, but will also get the opportunity to choose scooters with better technology, safety and design at competitive prices.
