PM Modi expressed grief over the demise of Pandwani singer Teejan Bai, said – irreparable loss to the world of art and culture.

New Delhi, 5 July. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep condolence on the demise of famous Pandwani singer Teejan Bai, calling it an irreparable loss for the world of Indian art and culture. He said that Teejan Bai, with her amazing presentation, gave global recognition to Pandwani, the traditional folk art of Chhattisgarh.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed grief over the demise of Teejan Bai and said that she left an indelible mark in the field of folk art through her singing. He wrote, “Tejan Bai played an important role in giving prestige to the art of Chhattisgarh at the national and international level. Her demise is an irreparable loss to the art and music world. My condolences are with her family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Died at the age of 70

Teejan Bai was unwell for some time. He breathed his last at AIIMS, Raipur at the age of 70. There is a wave of mourning in the folk music and Indian cultural world due to his demise.

Pandwani got global recognition

Born in 1956 in Ganiyari village near Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, Teejan Bai took Pandwani folk art to new heights. Pandwani is the traditional folk singing style of Chhattisgarh, in which the tales of Mahabharata are brought alive on stage through singing, acting and impressive presentation. On the basis of his distinctive style and powerful voice, he gave recognition to this folk art not only in the country but throughout the world.

Many prestigious honors including Padma Vibhushan

The Government of India honored him with several prestigious civil honors for his invaluable contribution to the preservation and promotion of Indian folk art. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2003 and Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award, in 2019. Apart from this, he received many national and international honors including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. The death of Teejan Bai is being considered as the end of an era of a glorious tradition of Indian folk art. His art and legacy will long continue to inspire generations to come.
